hey, calling the art people out there
im doing an art project atm, and my chosen studio area is painting.
we are doing self portrait, and im using the influence of Frida Kahlo.

id like to do a self portrait with hands/hand in the image too, as that allows you to have more detail within the final image

any inspirational ideas for my piece? using Frida Kahlo as an influence, and painting as my studio area?

Are you looking for names of some of her works for your inspirational ideas?

If you do a search to look at some of her paintings, you might find some in which she is holding animals. One such work is ‘Me and My Parrots’, 1941.

Another self-portrait that shows her hands is ‘Self-Portrait with Cropped Hair’, 1948. In it she is wearing pant and a suit jacket, looking like a pant suit, which was just a bit ahead of its day and had almost an ‘avante-garde’ look that was once captured by Vogue magazine. the hair could be tied back. It would not have to be cut, for sure. Both her hands are showing in this one.

The picture she has painted of herself holding someone in her arms, titled in Spanish ‘El Abrazo de Amor del Universo, la Tierra (México), Diego,Yo y el Sr. Xoloti’, 1949, shows a few pairs of hands of different sizes.

If you look among her self-portraits with monkeys you hopefully will find some inspirational ideas with hands in the picture, depending on how prominent you wish the hands to be.

so im wondering what art work of Van Gogh do you think is the most inspiring, and why do you think this?
i am doing some research about him, and peoples opinions of him, and finding out about the inspiration his paintings give seemed a good place to start,
Personally, i believe Sunflowers gives me the most inspiration, as the flower is bright, even though it always looks dead. it shows you can make light of sad events, and that sad events can always bring light. (:

For me, it has to be Vincent’s painting of the Church at Auvers.
Vincent wanted to be a priest above all other things. He was deeply religious, but was prone to bouts of depression and this is why the Catholic Church refused him entry to the priesthood.
Take a look at the painting, it reflects Vincent’s dissapointment at being turned away by the Catholic Church.
He paints a church without a door, a church with no way in. He stands outside in the cold and rain, rejected by the world and the world he wanted to belong to. The emotions that this picture generates are incredible, truly incredible.

I’m trying to find art and pictures that are frame-worthy for my room. I love old 20th century pictures that depict a modern world that never came to be. The best term I’ve found is retro-futurism. For example, here is one picture I like:

http://www.allposters.com/gallery.asp?startat=/getposter.asp&APNum=4248011&CID=0370505F3ED5465FB64970525EAFEA84&PPID=1&search=future&f=t&FindID=0&P=2&PP=6&sortby=PD&cname=&SearchID=

My question is if anyone knows a great website that has a vast repository of these pictures at an affordable price. I would rather do the framing on my own, but if the price is right, I would also use a website’s services. Thanks in advance!

In your search bar, ask were to find retro futurism. it should give you places to look.

I am doing a research paper on Edward Hopper. - Edward Hopper was a very influential artist who expressed strong emotions through inspirational art. If not, could you tell me what I did wrong?

I think it’s a very good thesis statement so long as you intend to explain why he was influential, what made him influential, and how he expressed strong emotions through his art. What made him different from other painters.

But yeah- really great thesis statement.

Ohh- I really like James’ answer as well…

I just started drawing a few days ago and may start doing something with art as a future possibility. http://www.drawingnow.com/lilbella1284/gallery/id_75537-rini.html

You need to practice a lot more and develop your own style, this sort of drawing is hardly unique. Practice lots, try other styles, develop your own. That’s the only way to become a good drawer.
As a beginning, you have potential, but don’t be afraid to deviate from the norm!

I am looking for something inspirational and not copyrighted. Something that shows that going green is important.

Please help, im having an artist block.

You can make something artistic out of garbage, especially non-recyclables. There are some books on the topic. Here:

http://www.amazon.com/1000-Ideas-Creative-Reuse-Restyle/dp/1592535402/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1266987671&sr=8-1

http://www.amazon.com/Green-Guide-Artists-Resources-Eco-Conscious/dp/1592535186/ref=pd_sim_b_3

Just click on the pictures to "look inside" for ideas. I have the first book "1000 Ideas for Creative Reuse: Remake, Restyle, Recycle, Renew". There are so many cool projects in that book. Perhaps your local library will have it.

PLS HELP! Does this sound silly or good?
Could someone please help correct my essay for the School of Visual Arts. How could I make it better?. Is it a good? Brutal serious honesty is preffered. Thank you

Q:

In 500 words or less, discuss your reasons for pursuing undergraduate study in the visual arts. Feel free to include any information about yourself, your goals and interests that may not be immediately apparent from the review of your transcripts or portfolio
I was born in Togo, West Africa, in a place where life is valued differently compared to most areas of the Western world. It has its own radiating culture and spirit expressed through various forms of art but it is also a place full of suffering and struggle. Growing up without most ‘normal’ things a child would have and being an only child I often occupied myself exploring nature or drawing. Drawing to me was my meditation, a time where the past and the future was a blur and only being in the present mattered, a blissful state where I found my true self and was allowed to explore it as well as express it.
Coming from a family which constitutes its own little world, encompassing several nationalities and wherein we communicate freely in English, Spanish and French I was very privileged to have the chance to travel. As I grew up a traveler, studying in different countries not only has made me more self-reliant, mature and disciplined but also very knowledgeable in many areas of the arts. Visiting museums, galleries and meeting local artists in places ranging from China, Rwanda to Venice each with their own impactful contribution to the art world I have been able to teach myself and explore its interesting world always with the notion of questioning “What is art?”
As an artist I’ve struggled many times minimizing detail and simplifying my work, there is always so much I want to say, so much I’d like to tell the viewer. Conveying emotion is my passion in art, creating art that speaks to the heart as well as forces oneself to question the self, the elements and/or society. I have a strong interest in learning in a more studious detailed way its craft, its history and how I could gear my knowledge and skill towards a professional career. While thoroughly researching about universities across the globe and taking continuing-ed courses at SVA during my year off from school to gain work experience in NYC SVA is most definitely my match.
The imagination of an artist and how they unfold it in the physical is incredibly fascinating to me. Being able to creatively convey a visual representation and interpret an idea is always a challenge. This is why I’d like to pursue a career in being a concept artist/ illustrator to challenge myself and by professors at SVA who will help me help myself get to my dream.
Coming back to the question of “What is Art”? It is everything and it is anything. If what you can imagine can be turned into art then what is thought in the mind itself is an art already the only thing is once it’s formed into the physical that’s when a world of ultimate fascination and communication opens up. It is who brings it out of the mind and births part of their soul- their idea that they are then called an artist. I’d like to be fully engaged in this world of fascination and talent and become a true artist at SVA.

Your essay sounds great so far, but I do have some suggestions. To make these suggestions easier to understand, I have copied your essay and put the suggestions near the places that the suggestions are mentioning.

(Suggestion) At the beginning of the essay, you mention that drawing is blissful and your meditation. Instead of only mentioning this, maybe you could, at the beginning of your essay, write a descriptive instance of your experience when you draw. It does not have to be very long. One paragraph may be all that you need. This may help capture the reader’s attention better.

(Suggestion) After you mention the question, "What is art?", you mention struggling with simplifying your work. Then, you answer that question. You might want to answer that question right away instead of "sidetracking" to another topic. This may make your essay easier to read and avoid confusion.

(Suggestion) Are these your goals? If these are your goals, them maybe you could emphasize that these are your goals.

(Suggestion) The above information sounds like the ending of an essay. Maybe this information could go at the end of your essay.

Overall, this is a great essay! You use very descriptive words, which may be to your advantage, especially since this is for the School of Visual Arts.

I wish you the best of luck!

My best friend is an artists and her muse, the subject for all her art, has been the man she loves. He left her and now she has stopped making art. she believes that if her muse is gone she cant make art. I would like to help her find a new muse, she is an amazing artists. her mediums are oil paint, charcoal, pastels and regular sketching

I always find inspiration in nature. You should try to get her to sketch a landscape.
